A freezer that runs while food goes soft, whether a chest freezer (the deep freezer in many Zimbabwean homes) or an upright, is usually losing cold air through a worn seal, struggling with frost over the evaporator, set too warm, or short of cooling from the fan, the compressor or the refrigerant. Common Reasons a Freezer Stops Freezing
These are the usual causes, roughly from the simplest to the most involved.

Cold but Not Cold Enough
A freezer that still feels cold but leaves ice cream soft is usually close to working. Check the thermostat first, then look at the seal: close the lid or door on a sheet of paper and see whether it pulls out easily. Frequent opening on a hot afternoon, a garage location and an overfilled cabinet all slow the freeze as well.
If the setting is right and the seal holds, the freezer is ready for a technician. We measure the cabinet temperature, check the fans and the defrost system on frost-free models, and test how hard the compressor is working.
When the Temperature Keeps Changing
Swings in temperature point to a thermostat or sensor that is switching at the wrong point, a defrost cycle that runs too long, or a seal that only leaks when the door is closed a certain way. Note the times it is warmest and whether the display shows a different temperature from a thermometer inside. That history helps us find the fault on the first visit.
Does a Freezer That Is Not Freezing Need Regassing?
Sometimes, but other faults are more common. A sealed cooling system holds its refrigerant for life unless a pipe or joint leaks, so a gas shortage always comes with a leak that needs repairing too.
