Fridge getting warmer

Causes
Why fridges lose gas, and what looks like it
Refrigerant does not get used up. It circulates in a sealed system for the life of the fridge unless something lets it out.
Leaks at joints and welds

Corroded or damaged evaporators
- Pinholes in aluminium evaporators after years of condensation

- A stopped condenser or evaporator fan

How we regas a fridge
Regassing done properly takes more than adding gas. This is what happens at your home:

Cooling diagnosis
Airflow, fans, the thermostat, the defrost system and door seals are checked first, so a gas job is only quoted when it is the fix.

Leak test
The sealed system is pressure-tested and the joints, evaporator and condenser are checked to find where the gas escaped.

Leak repair
The leak is sealed, and the filter drier is replaced where the work calls for it.

Evacuation
A vacuum pump removes air and moisture from the system, because both damage the compressor and block cooling.

Charge by weight
The system is charged with the refrigerant and the amount printed on the rating label, commonly R600a or R134a.

Why regassing is not a DIY job
- R600a, the gas in most modern household fridges, is a flammable hydrocarbon. It needs a trained technician, no naked flames and good ventilation.
- Gas added without finding and sealing the leak escapes again, and an overcharged system can damage the compressor.
- Refrigerant should never be vented into the air.
- Do not chip ice off the evaporator. A knife or screwdriver used to free ice is a common cause of punctured evaporators.

Usually worth repairing
- A leak we can reach on a fridge in good condition: seal, evacuate and regas
- A compressor that still runs well on a system that has lost its gas
- A failed start relay or overload, which is often mistaken for a dead compressor
- A compressor replacement on a newer or higher-end fridge, done with a new filter drier and a fresh charge
Often better to replace
- A seized or burnt-out compressor on an older, low-cost fridge
- Leaks inside the insulated walls, which cannot be reached
- A corroded evaporator with several leaks
- A fridge that has needed regassing more than once because the leak keeps returning
