Causes

What usually causes fridge faults

The same symptom can have several causes. These are the ones that most often explain it, from the simplest check to the most involved.

Running but not cold

  • Dust-clogged condenser coils or a blocked vent behind or under the fridge, so heat cannot escape
  • A stopped condenser or evaporator fan on frost-free models
  • Ice packed over the evaporator because a defrost part failed: the heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor, or the timer or control board
  • A thermostat or temperature sensor reading wrongly
  • A refrigerant leak, confirmed by a test before any regassing

Read the full fault guide: Running but not cold

Freezer cold but fridge warm

  • The evaporator fan has stopped, so the cold air stays in the freezer
  • Frost blocking the air duct between the compartments after a defrost failure
  • A damper (the flap that lets cold air into the fridge) stuck closed, or a faulty damper control

Read the full fault guide: Freezer cold but fridge warm

Water inside or on the floor

  • A blocked defrost drain, so meltwater overflows into the cabinet
  • A cracked or displaced drain pan under the fridge
  • A worn door seal letting warm, humid air in, which turns to water and ice
  • A leaking water line or dispenser on plumbed models

Read the full fault guide: Water inside or on the floor

Food freezing in the fridge

  • The thermostat set too cold, or a thermostat or sensor stuck
  • A damper stuck open, flooding the fridge with freezer air
  • Food packed against the cold-air outlet at the back

Read the full fault guide: Food freezing in the fridge

Clicking, buzzing or a hot compressor

  • A failing start relay or overload protector: a click every few minutes and no start
  • Low supply voltage, often when power returns after load-shedding
  • A worn fan motor, or a fan blade catching on ice
  • A compressor with a winding or mechanical fault

Read the full fault guide: Clicking, buzzing or a hot compressor

Completely dead

  • No supply at the socket, a blown plug fuse or a damaged cable
  • A voltage protector (fridge guard) holding the power off until the supply settles
  • A control board damaged by a power surge
  • A thermostat or wiring fault inside the cabinet

How we diagnose

How we diagnose a fridge at your home

We work from the simplest checks to the sealed system, so you only pay for the repair your fridge actually needs.

  1. 1

    Listen and look

We confirm the fridge has power, check the settings and any display code, and listen for the compressor and fans.

  2. 2

    Measure the temperatures

Both compartments are measured against normal targets of about 3 to 5°C in the fridge and minus 18°C in the freezer.

  3. 3

    Check airflow and seals

Condenser coils, vents, fans and door seals come next, because blocked airflow and worn seals cause many warm fridges.

  4. 4

    Test the defrost system

On frost-free models we read the frost pattern on the evaporator and test the heater, defrost thermostat or sensor and the timer or board.

  5. 5

    Test the electrics

The start relay, overload, thermostat, sensors and compressor windings are tested with a meter, along with the supply voltage.

  6. 6

    Check the sealed system last

Only when everything else passes do we test for a refrigerant leak. A leak is found and repaired before any gas goes in, then you get the quote.

Safety before the technician arrives

  • Switch the fridge off at the wall if you smell burning, see scorch marks on the plug or socket, or the fridge trips the power.
  • Do not chip ice off the back panel with a knife or screwdriver. One slip can pierce a refrigerant pipe and turn a defrost fault into a sealed-system repair.
  • Leave refrigerant to a trained technician. Many modern fridges use R600a, which is flammable, and gas should never be released into the air.
  • If the fridge has been moved or laid on its side, let it stand upright for a few hours before switching it on.
  • A voltage protector with a start delay helps protect the compressor when power returns after load-shedding. See appliance damage after power cuts.

Repair or replace

Repair or replace your fridge?

Once we know the fault, we tell you honestly whether the repair is worth it. As a guide:

Usually worth repairing

  • Fan motors, thermostats, temperature sensors and start relays
  • Door seals, hinges and blocked defrost drains
  • Defrost heaters, defrost thermostats and timers
  • A leak we can reach and seal, followed by regassing
  • Control boards on mid-range and premium fridge-freezers

Often better to replace

  • A failed compressor on an older, low-cost fridge, where a compressor and regas come close to the price of a new one
  • Leaks in pipework buried inside the insulated walls, which cannot be reached
  • A heavily corroded evaporator with repeat leaks
  • Rusted-through panels or failed insulation
  • Several major faults at once on a fridge over about 10 to 15 years old

A useful rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new fridge, replacing it is usually better value. We say so before you spend anything. Compressor decisions are covered on fridge compressor problems.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Fridge Repairs

What should I check before booking a fridge repair?

Check the wall socket has power, the door closes fully, and whether one or both compartments have warmed up. Leave any ice on the liner for the technician to see. When you book a repair, send the brand, the model from the rating label and what the fridge is doing now.

Why is my fridge running but not getting cold?

Power can reach the fridge while a fan, sensor, ice blockage, door seal, the compressor or the sealed system stops it removing heat. Fridge not cooling explains how we trace the cause, and fridge regassing covers gas faults from US$30.

Should I switch my fridge off if it is making unusual noises?

Switch it off if you hear grinding metal, smell burning or see a scorched plug. A new buzz or rattle on a fridge that still cools can stay on so the technician hears it, as long as the socket is dry. Fridge making noise covers the usual sources.

What information helps diagnose a fridge fault faster?

The brand, model, whether the freezer still holds ice, any display code, where the leak or ice appears, and whether the fault started after a power cut or a move. A photo of the rating label is more useful than the badge on the door.

How long does a fridge repair take?

Many repairs, such as a fan, thermostat, start relay or door seal, are finished on the first visit. If a part has to be sourced, we agree a return visit with you. Regassing takes longer because the leak is repaired and the system evacuated before any gas goes in.

Can a power surge damage my fridge?

Yes. A surge when power returns after load-shedding can damage the control board, the start relay or the compressor. A voltage protector with a start delay helps protect it. Appliance damage after power cuts explains what to check.

Do you repair shop display fridges as well?

Yes. Display fridges, bottle coolers, chest freezers and under-counter units for shops and restaurants are covered on commercial refrigeration. Walk-in rooms are on cold room installation and repair.
