Causes
What usually causes freezer faults
Chest freezers and frost-free uprights fail in different ways. These are the causes that most often explain each symptom, simplest first.
Not freezing or food softening
- The thermostat or sensor faulty, or the dial knocked to a warmer setting
- Poor ventilation, often a chest freezer pushed against a wall in a hot garage or pantry
- A worn lid or door seal
- A failed start relay or compressor
- A refrigerant leak, confirmed by a test before any regassing
Thick ice and frost
- A lid or door seal that no longer closes tight, letting humid air in
- The lid opened often or left ajar, or the freezer so full that the lid lifts
- On frost-free uprights, a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer
- On manual-defrost chest freezers, ice that simply needs defrosting once it passes about 5 mm
Running all the time
- A hot room or blocked ventilation around the condenser
- A seal letting warm air in
- A thermostat stuck closed
- Low refrigerant after a leak
Water under or inside
- The drain plug of a chest freezer left out after defrosting
- A blocked defrost drain on a frost-free upright
- Condensation from a worn seal
- Warm outer walls on a chest freezer are usually the condenser built into the walls doing its job. Walls that sweat or feel cold on the outside point to insulation that has broken down, which we check.
Too cold
- A thermostat stuck on or set to maximum
- Fast-freeze or super-freeze left switched on
- A faulty sensor or control board
Dead or tripping the power
- No supply, a blown plug fuse or a voltage protector holding the power off
- A thermostat, relay or control board damaged by a surge

How we diagnose a freezer
The freezer stays where it is. We start with the checks that cost nothing to fix and finish with the sealed system.

Power and settings
We confirm the supply, the thermostat setting, any fast-freeze switch and whether a voltage protector is holding the power off.

Measure the temperature
A freezer should hold about minus 18°C. We measure it and watch how quickly the cabinet pulls down.

Seals and ventilation
Lid and door seals, hinges, the space around the cabinet and the condenser are checked, in the walls or on the back.

Defrost system
On frost-free uprights we test the defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the timer or control board.

Electrical tests
The start relay, overload, thermostat and compressor windings are tested, along with the supply voltage.

Sealed system last
A leak test confirms whether refrigerant is the problem and where the leak is, so we can tell you whether it can be repaired.
Protect your food and your freezer
- Keep the lid or door closed. A full freezer holds its temperature for many hours if nobody opens it.
- Move soft or thawing food to a cooler box with ice packs while you wait.
- Never chip ice off the walls with a knife or screwdriver. The refrigerant pipes run just behind the liner.
- Switch off at the wall if the freezer trips the power, smells of burning or water is near the socket.
- Leave refrigerant to a trained technician. R600a, used in many freezers, is flammable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Freezer Repairs
Should a chest freezer stay switched on if frost is closing the lid?
Thick ice around the lid stops it sealing, so the freezer works harder. Leave the ice for the technician rather than chipping at the liner, and photograph the frost. Say whether the motor still starts when you book freezer repairs.
Is a garage freezer diagnosed the same way as a kitchen fridge-freezer?
We inspect chest and upright freezers where they stand. Garage heat, a weak lid seal and overfilling are common extra factors. If only the fridge section of a fridge-freezer has failed, book fridge repairs.
Can I leave food in the freezer during the visit?
Leave hard-frozen food in place unless water near the socket means the unit must go off. Move soft or thawed food to a cooler box. The technician wants to see how the cabinet holds temperature.
Does a freezer that runs all day need gas?
