Hisense is a Chinese manufacturer, and many of the fridges sold in Southern Africa are built at its factory in Atlantis, near Cape Town, which has made fridges since 2013. Many Hisense fridges sold here are frost-free, with electronic controls, temperature sensors and, on newer models, inverter compressors. Side-by-side models add a water dispenser.
On a frost-free Hisense, the fan and the timed defrost system do the work that a cold plate does in an older fridge, so they are where most cooling faults start. Regassing is only quoted when a test shows a leak, and fridge regassing starts from US$30, after diagnosis. Which Hisense Fridge Do You Have?
Top-mount fridge-freezer
Freezer on top, usually frost-free with a single evaporator in the freezer feeding the fridge through a vent and damper.
Bottom-mount combi
Freezer drawers below, often with a display and an inverter compressor. Sensor faults can show as a code.
Side-by-side and multi-door
Wide cabinets, many with a water dispenser. The dispenser line, valve and filter housing are added to the checks.
How Hisense Fridges Fail and What We Test
Frost-free cooling: a fan blows air across an evaporator hidden behind the freezer panel. A heater melts its frost on a timed cycle, controlled by a timer or the main board and watched by a sensor. When any of those fails, frost builds until the fan jams, and the fridge section warms first.
Damper and sensors: on many models a damper controls how much cold air reaches the fridge, guided by temperature sensors. A stuck damper or a sensor reading wrong makes the fridge too warm or freezes the milk, with the compressor working normally.
Inverter compressors: newer Hisense fridges run a variable-speed compressor from a control board. A silent compressor is tested at the board as well as at the compressor, because either can cause the same warm cabinet.
Dispensers: a slow or leaking dispenser is usually a frozen line, a valve or the filter housing, fixed without any gas work.
Power cuts: the electronic control board is the part most exposed to the surge when power returns after load-shedding. Unplug the fridge during a cut and wait a few minutes after power returns before plugging it back in. See appliance damage after power cuts.
Hisense Fridge Faults by Symptom
Hisense codes differ between models, so if your display shows one, send it with the model number. Without a code, the symptom tells us where to start.

Many of these faults start with ice. Clearing the ice without repairing the defrost fault only buys a few weeks, so we find the cause.
Safety Before You Touch the Fridge
- Unplug the fridge before clearing ice, and defrost with towels and a bowl of warm water, never a knife or scraper: the cooling pipes puncture easily.
- If water from a leak or dispenser has reached the socket, switch off at the wall before unplugging.
- Leave the sealed system to a technician. Most modern fridges use R600a, a flammable refrigerant, and regassing needs a leak repair, the right equipment and a gas-free workspace.
- The control board and compressor carry mains voltage, so those tests are for a technician.
