Defy is a South African brand, part of Arçelik, the group that also owns Beko, since 2011. Many Defy fridge-freezers in Harare homes are direct-cool models: a cold plate in the back wall of the fridge, a freezer that needs defrosting by hand, a dial thermostat and a compressor started by a relay. Newer Defy models add frost-free cooling with a fan, a defrost heater and electronic controls.
Which type you have changes the repair. On a direct-cool Defy, the thermostat, the starting relay, the door seal and the drain hole in the back wall are the first checks; on a frost-free model, the fan and defrost system. Regassing is only quoted when a test shows a leak, and fridge regassing starts from US$30, after diagnosis. Which Defy Fridge Do You Have?
Direct-cool fridge-freezer
Frost builds in the freezer and needs defrosting by hand; the fridge back wall frosts and drips as it cycles. Usually a dial thermostat inside the fridge.
Frost-free fridge-freezer
No frost to clear by hand. A fan blows cold air from a hidden evaporator, and a heater melts the frost on a timed cycle.

How Defy Fridges Fail and What We Test
Dial thermostat: a gas-filled tube runs from the dial to the cold plate and switches the compressor on and off. When it fails open, the fridge never starts; when it fails closed, the compressor runs without stopping and the fridge freezes food. It is one of the cheaper Defy repairs.
Starting relay and overload: the fixed-speed compressor is started by a small relay on its side, protected by an overload. A click every few minutes with a warm cabinet usually means the relay or overload, not the compressor, and both are quick to test.
Drain hole: on direct-cool models, frost on the fridge back wall melts and runs down a channel into a small hole above the salad drawer. When it blocks, water collects in the drawer or under it. Clearing it with warm water and a soft pipe cleaner usually fixes the leak.
Warm sides: many Defy fridges and chest freezers hide the condenser inside the side walls, so the sides feel warm when the compressor runs. That is normal, but it means the fridge needs space around it to shed heat.
Frost-free models: when the defrost heater, timer or sensor fails, frost builds over the evaporator until the fan stops and the fridge side warms, while the freezer may still feel cold at first.

Safety Before You Touch the Fridge
- Unplug the fridge before defrosting, and use towels and a bowl of warm water, never a knife or scraper: the freezer plate and cooling pipes puncture easily.
- If water has reached the socket, switch off at the wall before unplugging.
- Leave the sealed system to a technician. Most modern fridges use R600a, a flammable refrigerant, and regassing needs a leak repair, the right equipment and a gas-free workspace.
- The relay, overload and compressor terminals carry mains voltage, so those tests are for a technician.

Why are the sides of my Defy fridge hot?
Many Defy fridges and chest freezers have the condenser inside the side walls, so warm sides while the compressor runs are normal. Leave space around the fridge so that heat can escape.
