An LG fridge that shows an Er code, warms in the fridge section or will not start its compressor is diagnosed where it stands. We test the part the code points to and quote before any work starts.

Many LG fridges use an Inverter Linear compressor: instead of a crank, a linear motor drives the piston back and forth, controlled by the main board. Air from the freezer evaporator is spread through ducts and vents to both compartments, and larger models add Door-in-Door or InstaView panels, water dispensers and ice makers.
That design decides the order of our checks. A warm LG fridge is usually a fan, a duct blocked by ice or a defrost fault before it is the compressor, and a compressor that will not start is tested together with the board that drives it. Regassing is only quoted when a test shows a leak, and fridge regassing starts from US$30, after diagnosis. Which LG Fridge Do You Have?
Two-door, freezer on top
Frost-free with one evaporator in the freezer. Cold air reaches the fridge through a duct, so ice in that duct leaves the fridge warm while the freezer stays cold.
Bottom-freezer combi
Freezer drawer below, usually with a display and Inverter Linear compressor. Sensor and fan faults show as Er codes.
Side-by-side, InstaView and Door-in-Door
Tall double-door cabinets, often with a dispenser and ice maker. Dispenser leaks, ice maker faults and door-mounted panels are the extra checks.
How LG Fridges Fail and What We Test
Inverter Linear compressor: there is no starting relay to swap. When the compressor will not run, the board that drives it, the wiring and the compressor windings are tested together. If the compressor itself has failed, the replacement has to match and the sealed system is opened, so we price that carefully against the fridge's age.
One evaporator, many vents: most LG fridge-freezers cool both compartments from the freezer evaporator. Ice in the duct or a stalled fan stops cold air reaching the fridge section, which is a fan or defrost repair.
Defrost: a heater under the evaporator melts the frost on a timed cycle, watched by a sensor. When the heater, sensor or fuse fails, frost builds until the fan jams and an FF code appears.
LG codes may start with E, r or Er, so Er FF, r FF and E FF mean the same thing. Many LG fridges also support Smart Diagnosis through the LG ThinQ app; if you have run it, send us the result.
Power cuts: a surge when power returns after load-shedding can damage the main board. Unplugging the fridge during a cut and waiting a few minutes after power returns before plugging it back in protects it. See appliance damage after power cuts.
LG Fridge Error Codes
FF, FS and CO are documented by LG; the others appear on many LG models. Send the code exactly as displayed with the model number, because some codes differ between ranges.
Code: Er FF
What it means: The freezer fan has a fault.
What to check: Usually ice around the fan from a defrost fault or a door left ajar, then the fan motor. The defrost heater, sensor and fuse are tested so the ice does not return.
Code: Er FS
What it means: The freezer temperature sensor has a fault.
What to check: The sensor and its wiring are tested. Until it is replaced, the freezer may run too cold or not cold enough.
Code: Er CO
What it means: The main board and the display are not communicating.
What to check: The wiring through the door hinge and both boards are tested. A surge after a power cut can cause it.
Code: Er CF
What it means: The condenser fan is not running, on models that have one.
What to check: The fan near the compressor at the back is checked for dust and blockages, then tested. A stopped condenser fan lets the compressor overheat.
Code: Er dH
What it means: The defrost heater circuit has a fault, on many models.
What to check: The heater, the thermal fuse and the defrost sensor are tested. Left alone, frost builds until the fans jam.
Code: Er rS
What it means: The fridge temperature sensor has a fault, on many models.
What to check: The sensor in the fridge compartment and its wiring are tested.
A fan code means the fan could not turn, which is more often ice than a failed motor. For any other code, send a photo of the display.
Safety Before You Touch the Fridge
- Unplug the fridge before clearing ice, and defrost with towels and a bowl of warm water, never a knife or scraper: the cooling pipes puncture easily.
- If water from a leak or dispenser has reached the socket, switch off at the wall before unplugging.
- Leave the sealed system to a technician. Most modern fridges use R600a, a flammable refrigerant, and regassing needs a leak repair, the right equipment and a gas-free workspace.
- The main board and compressor carry mains voltage, so those tests are for a technician.
How an LG Fridge Repair Works
