Washing Machine Smells Bad?

Musty Drum, Mouldy Seal or a Burning Smell During the Cycle?

A musty smell usually comes from detergent residue and mould in the door seal, drawer or sump, often with water left standing after a slow drain. A burning smell is different and usually means a slipping belt, worn brushes or an electrical fault. Our technicians fix both on site in Harare.

Why Does My Washing Machine Smell?

A musty, damp smell comes from mould and detergent residue in the folds of the door seal, the detergent drawer and the sump, and it gets worse when water is left standing because the drain is slow. Low-temperature washes and too much detergent feed it. Most cases clear with a hot cleaning cycle, a clean seal and drawer, and a drain that empties fully.

A burning smell needs a technician: switch off and unplug. It usually means a slipping belt, worn carbon brushes or an overheating wire or pump. Our washing machine repairs technicians fix both kinds of smell on Samsung, LG, Defy, Hisense and every other brand, and a washing machine service includes a check of the drain, filter and door seal. Smells That Need Different Checks

Musty or mouldy

Mould in the door seal, drawer or sump.

Rotten egg or drain smell

Standing water or a drain hose without an air gap.

Burning rubber

A slipping drive belt.

Electrical burning

Worn brushes, a hot wire or a failing pump. Switch off now.

Smell on clean clothes

Detergent residue and low-temperature washes.

Common Causes of Washing Machine Odour

  • Mould in the door seal folds
  • Residue in the detergent drawer
  • Standing water from a slow drain
  • Drain hose too low or sealed into the waste
  • Only washing at low temperatures
  • Slipping belt or worn carbon brushes
  • Overheating wiring or pump

When to stop using the appliance

Switch the appliance off at the wall if you notice a burning smell, smoke, sparking, exposed wiring, repeated breaker trips or water near electrical parts. Leave electrical covers, high-voltage parts and the heater, motor, pump and anything behind a cover to a technician, then call or WhatsApp 0719 227 718 and we will arrange an assessment.

What Can You Safely Check First?

Wipe the door seal folds with a mild cleaner, wash the detergent drawer in warm water, clear the pump filter and run an empty hot wash with a machine cleaner. Leave the door and drawer open between washes so the drum dries.

When the Smell Means Stop Using the Machine

A burning or electrical smell, smoke or a hot plug means switch off at the wall, unplug and book a technician before the next wash.

How We Deal With Washing Machine Smells

For musty smells the technician cleans the seal, drawer and sump, checks the drain and the hose height, and advises on detergent and wash temperatures. For burning smells we test the belt, brushes, pump and wiring and replace the part that is overheating.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Washing Machine Smells Bad

How do I stop my washing machine smelling musty?

Clean the door seal folds and detergent drawer, clear the pump filter, run a hot empty wash with a machine cleaner every month, and leave the door open between washes.

Why does my washing machine smell like burning?

Usually a slipping belt or worn carbon brushes, sometimes an overheating wire or pump. Switch off at the wall and unplug, then book a visit.

Why do my clothes smell after washing?

Detergent residue, low-temperature washes and clothes left in the drum after the cycle are the usual causes. A slow drain that leaves water in the sump adds to it.

Can a service fix a smelly washing machine?

It helps. A washing machine service inspects the drain, filter and door seal and clears accessible residue. Monthly hot cleaning washes keep the smell away afterwards.
