Twin Tubs, Top-Loaders and Front-Loaders Repaired at Home

A Defy twin tub that will not spin, a top-loader that will not drain or a front-loader that stops with a code is diagnosed at your home. We test the part the symptom points to and quote before any work starts.

Defy is a South African brand, part of Arçelik, the group that also owns Beko, since 2011. Its washing machines come in three very different designs: twin tubs, automatic top-loaders and front-loaders. A twin tub has two simple motors and mechanical timers; a front-loader has a door lock, a heater and an electronic board. The first thing we ask is which one you have.

Defy codes differ between ranges and generations, so rather than guess from a generic list, we match the code on the display to your model number. For faults every brand shares, see washing machine repairs; for Defy fridges, freezers and cookers, see Defy appliance repairs.

We are an independent repairer, not an authorised Defy service agent. If your machine is still under the manufacturer's or retailer's warranty, contact them first. Once the warranty has ended, book a repair or call 0719 227 718 with the model and what the machine is doing.

Which Defy Washing Machine Do You Have?

Twin tub

Two tubs side by side: one washes, one spins. You fill the wash tub by hose or bucket and move the washing across by hand, which also lets you reuse wash water when supply is unreliable.

Automatic top-loader

Loads from the top, fills and drains by itself and washes with a pulsator or agitator in the base of the drum. See top loader washing machine repairs for faults top-loaders share.

Front-loader

Loads from the front with a door that locks during the cycle, heats its own water and usually spins faster than a top-loader. See front loader washing machine repairs for faults front-loaders share.

How Defy Twin Tubs, Top-Loaders and Front-Loaders Differ

In a twin tub, the wash motor turns the pulsator through a belt and pulley, and the spin motor drives the spin basket directly. Each motor has a run capacitor. When a capacitor fails, the motor hums but will not turn, which is one of the cheaper twin tub repairs.

The spin side has a lid safety switch and a brake that stops the basket when the lid opens. A spinner that will not start, or one that keeps turning with the lid up, points to that switch or brake, and the brake must work before the machine is safe to use.

Twin tubs drain by gravity through a valve set by the drain knob, so the hose must run downhill to a low outlet. Automatic top-loaders drain either through a valve or with a pump, depending on the model; we check which yours has before testing it.

Front-loaders add the parts twin tubs do not have: an electrical door lock, a pump filter at the bottom front, a heater and a control board. Those boards are the most exposed to the surge when power returns after load-shedding, so switch the machine off at the wall during a cut. See appliance damage after power cuts.

Defy Washing Machine Faults by Machine Type

Find your machine and the symptom you see. This is where we start, and each check is tested before any part is replaced.

  • Machine: Twin tub

Symptom: The spinner will not spin.

What we check: Lid safety switch, spin timer, brake, spin motor and its capacitor.

  • Machine: Twin tub

Symptom: The wash motor hums but the pulsator does not turn.

What we check: Run capacitor, belt and pulley, and anything jammed under the pulsator.

  • Machine: Twin tub

    Symptom: Water leaks underneath.

What we check: Drain valve seal, pulsator shaft seal, hoses and the tub itself.

  • Machine: Top-loader

Symptom: It will not spin or drain.

What we check: Lid switch, drain valve or pump, belt and the clutch that switches between wash and spin.

  • Machine: Top-loader

Symptom: It overfills or will not fill.

What we check: Water level sensor and its hose, then the inlet valve.

  • Machine: Front-loader

    Symptom: It will not drain.

What we check: Pump filter, sump hose, then the drain pump.

  • Machine: Front-loader

    Symptom: The door stays locked.

What we check: Water left in the drum, then the door lock.

  • Machine: Front-loader

Symptom: It knocks or roars on spin.

What we check: Shock absorbers, counterweights and drum bearings.

If your Defy shows a code, send it exactly as displayed with the model number from the rating label, and we match it before the visit. See washing machine error codes for general guidance.

Safety Before You Touch the Washing Machine

  • Unplug the machine before clearing a filter, a drain or anything caught under a pulsator.
  • Do not use a twin tub spinner with a faulty lid switch or brake. The basket must stop when the lid opens.
  • If the machine trips the electricity or smells of burning, switch it off at the wall and leave it off until it is checked.
  • Capacitors can hold a charge after the machine is unplugged, so motor and capacitor tests are for a technician.

How a Defy Washing Machine Repair Works

Tell us whether it is a twin tub, top-loader or front-loader, and send the model number from the rating label, which on most machines is on the back or the side.

A technician comes to your home and works on the machine where it stands. Twin tub motor, timer and capacitor faults are usually diagnosed in one visit; front-loader codes are matched to your model first.

You get the diagnosis and a quote before any work starts. If water is still in a front-loader's drum, leave the door closed and we drain it safely.

Defy Washing Machine Repair Costs

Every Defy repair is quoted after diagnosis and before any work starts. A twin tub capacitor, belt, lid switch or drain valve is usually an inexpensive repair; a front-loader board or bearings cost more.

Twin tubs are simple machines, so repair is usually worth it until the tub itself is cracked or rusted through. On an older front-loader with failed bearings, we compare the cost with a replacement and tell you plainly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you repair Defy twin tub washing machines?

Yes. We repair Defy twin tubs at your home, including spinners that will not spin, wash motors that hum without turning, timers and leaks underneath.

Why will my Defy twin tub spinner not spin?

Check the lid is fully closed and the load is spread evenly. If it still will not spin, the lid safety switch, the spin timer, the brake, the spin motor or its capacitor has usually failed.

Why does my Defy twin tub hum but not wash?

A hum with no movement usually means the wash motor's run capacitor has failed, the belt has slipped off, or something is jammed under the pulsator. Unplug the machine and leave the motor to a technician.

Why is my Defy top-loader not draining?

Check the drain hose is not kinked and runs down to a low outlet. If it is clear, the drain valve or pump, depending on the model, is tested next.

What do the codes on my Defy front-loader mean?

Defy codes differ between ranges, so send the code exactly as displayed with the model number and we match it to your machine before the visit, rather than guessing from a generic list.

Do you repair Defy washing machines under warranty?

We are an independent repairer, not an authorised Defy agent. If the machine is under warranty, contact the retailer or Defy first. Once the warranty has ended, we repair it at your home.
